To qualify for the licensure examination, applicants must take and complete a beauty course at a licensed school in the state.

Regulated Beauty Services in Idaho, USA

Barber

Barbers in Idaho have two types of licenses, barber and barber-stylist. The barber license requires students to finish 900 training hours. Licensed cosmetologists can cross-enrol in barbering to get a license. They are credited 800 training hours and must complete the remaining hours of training for barbering.

Licensed barbers from another state or country who want to work in Idaho and don’t meet the licensure by endorsement qualifications may be credited 50 hours for every 3 months of barbering experience.

The barber-stylist license requires 1,500 training hours to qualify for the exam. Licensed cosmetologists who want this license are credited 1,400 training hours and must complete the remaining hours of training.

Licensed barber-stylists from another state or country who are not qualified for the licensure by endorsement may be credited 50 hours for every 3 months of practical experience.

Hairstylist

Hairstylists are licensed under the cosmetology license. They are required to finish 1,600 hours of training. Licensed barber-stylist can cross-enrol and are credited 1,300 hours. The same goes for licensed barbers who are credited 900 hours. Completion of the remaining hours will be decided by the school with approval from the board.

Licensed cosmetologists from another state or country may be credited 100 training hours or 200 apprenticeship hours for each 6 months of experience.

Makeup Artist

Makeup artists in Idaho are certified by the board and must complete 100 training hours to get their certificates.

Facialist / Waxing Technician

These beauty professions can hold a cosmetology or esthetician license to practice in the state. For estheticians, they should complete 600 training hours to take the licensure examination.

Licensed estheticians from another US state or country can be credited 60 training hours or 120 apprenticeship hours for every 6 months of work experience.

Nail Technician

Nail techs are expected to finish 400 training hours. Licensed nail technicians from another state or country may be credited 40 training hours or 80 apprenticeship hours for every 6 months of relevant work experience. Licensed cosmetologists interested in the nail tech license can be credited 1/7 of accumulated hours.

Massage Therapist

Massage therapists must complete 500 training hours and should pass a competency examination, such as the MBLEx, NCETMB or NCETM. The NCETMB and NCETM administered by the NCBTMB are honoured if taken before February 2015.

Non-Regulated Beauty Services in Idaho, USA

Lash Technician

The board doesn’t regulate lash techs in the state yet. Aspirants can train for lash extensions, lifting and tinting (including brow tinting) from any training school or provider.

Spray Tanning Technician

Interested individuals in spray tanning in the state can choose their training from any school. There are no licensing requirements for this service yet, so anyone can provide professional service for spray tanning
