Barbers in Montana can choose two licenses, barber and barber nonchemical. The barber license requires applicants to complete 1,100 training hours, while the barber nonchemical license must finish 900 training hours.

Facialist / Waxing Technician

These professionals are under the esthetician license, which requires applicants to complete 650 training hours.

Hairstylist / Makeup Artist / Lash Technician

Hairstylists, makeup artists and lash technicians are covered under the cosmetologist license, which is a broader scope than esthetics. Cosmetology includes hairdressing, esthetics, manicuring services and beauty culture. Applicants are expected to finish 1,500 training hours to take the examination.

Licensing exemptions for esthetics, cosmetology and barbering services are applied for makeup, mask and other theatrical device application or use for the purpose of visual arts production. More information about this is detailed in Section 37-31-102 of the law.

Nail Technician

Nail technicians or manicurists are expected to complete 400 training hours before taking the exam.

Massage Therapist

Massage therapists must successfully complete 500 training hours and should pass the national examination for massage therapy or any equivalent exam.
